Understanding Fire Protection
- Fire Proof vs Fire Resistant Safe
Due to the limitations of today's materials, all
safe products are susceptible to heat and fire damage with
exposed to a high enough temperature for an extended period
of time. Thus no safe product manufactured today is considered
"fire proof."
Certain materials can provide resistance to high temperatures
for limited periods of time. Products properly constructed
with these materials can be classified as a "fire resistant"
safe. Depending on the materials used and the methods of
construction, safe products can provide vary degrees of fire
resistance.
- What Level of Fire Resistance Do I Need?
In a home fire, the peak temperature and duration of the
fire can vary depending upon the size of the home, the
materials used to construct the home, the response time
of firefighters, etc. It is estimated that the typical
peak temperature in a home fire ranges between 800 to 1200
degrees Farenheit. The typical time for a firefighter to
bring a home fire into containment is extimated at 15 to
30 minutes.
To protect paper
documents, the internal temperature of a safe must remain
below 350 degrees Fahrenheit while exposed to the conditions
of the typical home fire. Thus, a safe should provide enough
fire resistance to keep the maximum internal temperature
of the safe below 350 degrees, when exposed to external
temperatures 1200 degrees for 30 minutes.
- Certified Fire Protection
To ensure superior fire protection,
look for safes certified by Omega Point Laboratories (O.P.L.)
and Underwriters Laboratories (U.L.) These organizations
provide independent certification of fire resistance in safe
products. A safe receives official certification for fire
resistance, if the maximum temperature inside the safe remains
below 350 degrees when exposed to standard test methods.
A safe recieving a certidied fire resistance rating of
"1200 degrees for 30 minutes" means that the safe will
maintan a maximum internal temperature below 350 degrees
when exposed to the conditions of a typical home fire.
The Safes sold at Midwest Lock and Security are from manufactures
that are certified by either OPL or UL. These safe manufacturers
include:
